I think the thing that bothers me the most about the Post Office story is that it has been going on for almost 25 years, and interest from politicians and those who should be safeguarding these issues was practically zero while they were able to get away with it being zero. The fact that it has only now blown up because ITV made a drama about it implies to me that politicians and those in power are only pretending to care.
Perhaps it’s an unusual scandal also in that it directly implicates all three of the main political parties. It’s yet another thing that makes me think of that prophecy from some time ago about society in Britain being totally rotten and ready to tear apart (the one with a new backbone rising up through the Pennines, if I remember aright).
