Bible Update: Genesis 12 blessing and curse in the news

Now [in Haran] the LORD said to Abram, “Go for yourself [for your own advantage] away from your country, from your relatives and your father’s house, to the land that I will show you.

“And I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you [with abundant increase of favors] and make your name famous and distinguished, and you will be a blessing [dispensing good to others].

“And I will bless those who bless you [who confer prosperity or happiness upon you] and curse him who curses or uses insolent language towards you; in you ALL the families and kindred of the earth will be blessed [and by you they will bless themselves].” (Genesis 12:1-3 Amplified Bible)

I was reminded of this passage last weekend as being the explanation for the amazing news of financial markets in the US defying the tumult convulsing rest of the world!

Bloomberg reports: “If we looked at the world through just a U.S. lens, it would all seem quite sublime. Geopolitics and geo-tensions are far from it, however,” Marty Mitchell, former head government bond trader at Stifel Nicolaus & Co. and now an independent strategist, said in his daily newsletter Thursday. “It’s just a strange and disconcerting world that we live in, yet the U.S. equity market and the U.S. economy just keep chugging along”;‘for now, investors may have good reason to be confident in U.S. assets amid the global turmoil. (but) that doesn’t mean they can ignore the events offshore, such as Turkey,’ says Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer of Bleakley Financial Group.”

To me this speaks of a consequential blessing coming upon the United States because president Trump recognises Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state of Israel and therefore relocated the US embassy there. (The next day Guatemala moved theirs too and their ambassador reports that on the day its doors opened no crime was reported in her homeland for the first time in its history! – ICEJ editorial, Word From Jerusalem.)

And now, a week later, those verses of Genesis 12 crop up again upon reading William Koenig’s Eye View from the White House in connection with these references:

THREE SOUTH AMERICAN LEADERS CURSED ISRAEL: one is dead, one is in jail and one was impeached!

Koenig: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Brazil’s Presidents Lula and Rousseff cursed Israel and suffered major personal and political consequences.

BRITAIN’S CORBYN NEXT??

Therefore I must ask, is deeply anti-Semitic Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn next?? His support of terrorists has been coming under increasing exposure. Read a survivor of the 1972 Munich Olympics murders: I nearly died with my teammates. I hope Corbyn disappears from politics.

We know God’s word doesn’t return to Him void, ie. without accomplishing its purpose, so it’s encouraging to see Him bringing it about.

  1. Hi Richard, you make an interesting observation on Jeremy Corbyn. I had been troubled by 2 articles I read this week that the strategy to stopping Brexit is now to oust Corbyn and replace him with a pro remain Labour leader. In answer to my concerns you have suggested that God will first keep him there for a purpose and then move him on.

  2. This is excellent. Many people believe that President Harry Truman was reelected in 1948 because he was the first head of state to recognize the state of Israel. God is blessing President Trump and the United States because Trump moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.

  3. In similar vein: the Balfour Declaration, dated 2 November 1917, which promised a national homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine, shows the efficacy of the principle discussed above “I will bless those who bless you”. The declaration, agreed Government policy, was released to the press on 9 November. It was heartfelt and undoubtedly a blessing to the Jews: there was an almost immediate counter blessing!
General Allenby, the British commander in the Middle East, launched an offensive to capture Jerusalem on 31 October 1917. He took Gaza on 7 November and Jaffa on 16 November. As Allenby’s forces approached Jerusalem the German and Turkish forces decided to withdraw from the city.
General Allenby and his commanders walked into the undefended city of Jerusalem on 9 December 2017. That was truly remarkable!
Unfortunately, subsequent UK governments have not been so clear cut in their endeavours to bless God’s chosen people!

    • Many thanks Neil as this has been on mind as a result of reading a history undergraduate’s assumption that people voted for Brexit because they wanted to return to days of our Empire. Had I said we lost it because we reneged upon that Declaration, then I’d doubt his ability to grasp that fact.

    • What’s equally remarkable my friend is the fact related in The Invisible Hand by Victor Dunstan (page 116) that the Anglican liturgical reading for 8th Dec, and presumably planned maybe centuries beforehand, was Isaiah 31:4-5. It speaks of the protection and preservation of Jerusalem – ‘So the LORD of Hosts will come down to fight for Mount Zion and for its hill. Like birds flying about, so will the LORD of Hosts defend Jerusalem. Defending, He will also deliver it; passing over, He will preserve it’ (NKJV)

      • WOW, great stuff! This one could run and run. Ezekiel emphasises the mountains of Israel (36:1-2, 4-5, 38:8-9, 38:21, 39:1-2, 39:4) as having great end-times significance. I can envisage circumstances where a coalition, under Russian leadership, might justify a limited assault on the mountains of Israel (West Bank, so called “occupied territories”), with the stated intent of removing “illegal” settlements and enforcing the establishment of a Palestinian state (and claiming that they are acting to implement a UN resolution). “So the Lord of Hosts will come down to fight for Mount Zion ….”. That could be the start of the saving of Israel, in both senses!
