‘We should be thankful that the kind of respectable, civic-minded people on whom the burden of new, foreign arrivals is being forced see an unofficial vote as their last resort. There is unlikely to be real civil unrest in Piddington when the Government bulldozes its policy through and the very nature and look of the village is transformed, perhaps forever, and without any trace of democratic mandate.
The challenge for the Government will be when other villages and towns start to hold similar votes and the Government realises it is on the wrong side of the argument. Prepare for Piddington Two, and even Piddington Three.’
