Continuing from last night’s call, Amir updates us citing New York Times as above and continues:

‘…According to sources familiar with the capabilities of the new aircraft, it does not yet include all of the defensive systems found on the older Air Force One. They said the decision to switch aircraft before departing Turkey was a precautionary measure taken on the recommendation of the Secret Service, not in response to any specific or credible threat.

President Trump denied that the change was made for security reasons. He said the newer aircraft departed earlier so it could stop at U.S. military bases, allowing service members to see what he described as a “magnificent” airplane. Later, however, Trump suggested that the decision might indeed have been related to threats against him.

When Trump departed Ankara, he boarded the older aircraft unusually quickly—before the traveling press had time to watch or photograph him climbing the stairs, contrary to normal protocol. In addition, passengers were instructed to lower the window shades before take-off.

The aircraft landed overnight at RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom, where Trump transferred to the new Qatari-donated aircraft for the flight back to Washington. After departure, the president acknowledged that the decision may have been connected to threats from Iran.

The older Air Force One is equipped with a defensive system designed to “blind” incoming surface-to-air missiles, as well as countermeasure dispensers that release metallic chaff to confuse and deflect missile guidance systems. It remains unclear how many, if any, of these capabilities have been installed on the new aircraft donated by Qatar, despite Trump’s push to bring it into service as quickly as possible.’
