Just a word of caution – I think that “Amir Tsafarti” post is a bit over-excited – Macron’s general election could certainly turn out to be very significant, but – taking the other examples I do know about – the big winners in the German elections have been Angela Merkel’s party, which is very much part of the Establishment there and is totally in the liberal tradition; in Italy the Brothers of Italy got 29%, less than 5% ahead of their nearest rivals, which is hardly a landslide; and in Belgium it’s just not a case of the PM having been defeated by “the right”, as his coalition already included parties of the right. It is true though that right-wing parties have on the whole (though not entirely) done better than leftist ones there. But Belgian politics is absolutely Byzantine anyway, like a five-dimensional Rubik’s cube.
All I’m really saying is that, if we are looking for some kind of pan-European turning point, I doubt this is it. The weight of the prophecies you have shared on this subject over the years, from what I remember, is that change will occur one or a few countries at a time – though perhaps quite quickly – rather than that there will be some kind of simultaneous transformation all over the continent. There was a memorable one from Veronika West about a glacier carving off little icebergs on that theme.
