A Trumpet Call: Conclusion & Prayer of Repentance – Neil MacKereth

Continuing Neil MacKereth’s paper A Trumpet Call:

CONCLUSION

The theme of much of the foregoing is about whether it is right for our nation to ask for God’s protection when we are not willing to accept His advice and precepts. As mentioned above, it is only by His amazing grace and mercy that we can have a glimmer of hope.

For about 45 years, I attended C of E services and read or listened to the Confession, from the Book of Common Prayer, without paying much heed to what it really says. At last it has come alive to me; it has burst into flames of reality. It is absolutely a prayer for our time.

‘ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind In Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.’

These words have power to those who listen, but are completely without point to the indifferent: they can easily be ignored. However, the Coronavirus is like a trumpet call from the watchtower: it cannot be ignored. It is heard by rich and poor, great and small, rulers and labourers, saints and sinners. The Lord is telling us that the idols that we worship have no value.

Almighty God, on behalf of our undeserving nation, we cry out to You for mercy.

Neil MacKereth, 6th April 2020

AMEN and AMEN AGAIN!

  1. All through The Bible it says “They have eyes but do not see and ears but do not hear” and that’s as relevant in our time as much as it was in the Prophets in the Old Testament as well as the New. I believe that only God can open these eyes but we all have a part to play in helping Him get His message through to those whose minds are closed. People come to The Lord in many different conditions but the one thing in common is they see Him through us His people. “It’s by your fruit you shall be known’ Matthew 7;16 Our words and deeds are the way God is seen by unbelievers so we have a huge responsibility in following The Way and open the eyes of the blind. It’s not always easy but it’s essential that Christians stick to Biblical ways and do not conform to the world. There’s no half way to do this it’s all or nothing.

  2. Thank you Neil for your succinct balanced and accurate summary. When I was an atheist I came to the conclusion that if life on this planet is all there is then it’s utterly futile, it was at that point that Jesus came into my life. I am praying that this current pandemic will cause many to ask the big questions that they too may come to the mercy seat and receive salvation. As for us we have to make the most of every opportunity and be ready to give an answer when asked which, of course, means we have to be clear in our own minds, so summaries such as yours are very helpful.

    How true Neil.
No one can ignor this virus, rich or poor, no mAtter what your station in life is, even if you are Prime Minister to this country or first in line to the throne.
A sports star or a celebrity or one of our idols.
GOD has spoken, no one is immune.

    • God seems to have looked after us in New Zealand. I can’t help but wonder that our MPs slipped through those radical abortion laws in the middle of this crisis and I believe there will be a consequence. By some quirk the leader (Simon Bridges) who opposed many features of that Law is detested by many in the country. Is he by some miracle going to be elevated?
